CHOICES is a non-profit community-based organization that provides services to latina women, high risk youth, pregnant teens, parenting adolescents and their families. CHOICES addresses the social, environmental an psychological issues that pertain to culture and gender. |
Mentoring for GirlsLas Palomitas is an after school intervention program designed specifically for adolescent Latinas. Las Palomitas empowers young Latina women to prioritize education by encouraging literacy, promotes advocacy skills so that young Latina women recognize that their voice matters and makes a difference, and to postpone sexual activity by providing accurate and appropriate sex education. Traditionally Latina girls have been overlooked, as a result Latina girls serve as surrogate mothers to younger siblings, housekeepers, and translators for their families. While these duties can teach these young women to be responsible it also leaves little room for their own self-growth. Therefore programs such as Las Palomitas are vital in helping young Latina women shape an identity that is equally respectful of their culture as well as fulfilling.
Las Palomitas is a ten week program that meets once a week after school for approximately two hours. During this time the girls will participate in activities that promote the objectives of the program. Activities will be carried out in a round table format to give the girls an opportunity to express themselves within a setting that is both safe and inviting to encourage open communication. This open dialogue can develop more positive views of themselves as well as their future.
