What is CAMP?

The Community Awareness Motivation Partnership (CAMP) Project provides bilingual/bicultural health education through the use of live theatre.

Purpose of CAMP

Now entering its’ ninth season, CAMP is aimed at creating a peer health education program that delivers accurate information, provides role-modeling, and promotes healthy self-esteem, family communication, and responsible decision making. CAMP actors strive to create, stage, and present an original production that addresses ten contemporary adolescent social issues. Audiences include teens, young adults, parents, and youth-serving professionals at conferences, schools, and special events.

How it all began

The CAMP project was developed in 1997 from the goals of the Community Challenge Grant (CCG) Program established as part of the Budget Act of 1996. CCG promotes community-based partnerships that aim to reduce teenage and unintended pregnancy and absentee fatherhood, promote responsible parenting, increase the involvement of fathers in the economic, social and emotional support of their children in communities with above average teen birth rates, known as “hot spots”.

“Know the Facts”

CAMP Project teensCAMP’s educational production, “Know The Facts,” is presented in ten contemporary, non-threatening, fun and humorous scenes. A blend of music, dance, drama, and humor entertain and educate audiences on various social issues. The production provides teens with an excellent vehicle to facilitate learning and social action. CAMP also allows teens to develop problem-solving skills and modify unhealthy behavior.

Fighting the statistics

The number of teen pregnancies in California has declined to its lowest level since 1985. From 2003-2004, there were 1,033 fewer babies born to teen girls. From 2001-2004, the teen birth rate has dropped 13.3 percent. Such numbers reflect the significance and important effects of programs like CAMP.

Where to catch a performance

CAMP theatre production is offered free of charge to Schools in the San Gabriel Valley, including El Monte, South El Monte, La Puente, and Bassett. CAMP is also available for subcontracting.

The Cast

Each season, actors go through a competitive audition process held throughout July. In August, the cast completes training led by professionals in health education. The 9th Season (2007-2008) consists of 9 talented thespians from the local communities.

The CAMP Project is one of 117 projects in California to receive governmental grant funding for preventative services for youth, families, and communities via the California Department of Health Services’ Community Challenge Grants Program. The CAMP Project also receives funding from the National Latina Health Network.
